Unfortunately, AppleWorks is incompatible with OS X 10.7 Lion and later, so I’ve had to find an alternative since installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks on my Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook. LibreOffice was a great MS Office replacement a year ago, but after a month of using Google Docs I don't think I'll ever install LibreOffice again.LibreOffice is a free alternative to the not-inexpensive Microsoft Office suite. I've completely replaced LibreOffice with Google Docs because it's just so much easier to use and makes working on a variety of devices (different OS's, mobile phones) a breeze. Side answer: you said "I need an office application." This is not OSS, but give Google Docs a try.

And I believe that it does a good job of prompting you to upgrade (if you want) when a new stable release comes out. As a software package that is maintained in a very professional manner, they always make it easy to find the most up-do-date version, rather than the version confusion that used to plague some OSS programs. That's a link to the current English (US) version, but they have installers for many platforms in many languages. It's a very professionally-done software package.Īs of today, the stable release of LibreOffice for Mac is 3.6.3. LibreOffice is updated frequently and has a fairly well-laid-out release schedule. I hesitate to call it a fork - technically that's true, but I believe at this point OpenOffice is fading from the limelight and LibreOffice is the big kahuna in a good way. Best answer: LibreOffice is the big, well-supported, well-regarded iteration of OpenOffice.
